Explore the forests of Mt. Elphinstone while learning about the Coastal Western Hemlock Zone ecosystem and its diversity of fungi, trees & understory plants with a guided hike led by local mushroom expert Shaggy Jack. We will forage for mushrooms, berries and edible plants along the way.*

The Summer Eco-Hike experience may be customized to suit your skill level and time. After registering and paying, send an email to shaggyjackswildmushrooms@gmail.com to let me know

1. Please choose your hiking level:
EASY – trails that are wide or well-maintained in a generally level, lower elevation forest. Best option for people with health conditions.
INTERMEDIATE – intermediate trails with some off-trail foraging, various steepness grades
ADVANCED – off-trail or rough trail, steep climbs, bushwhacking brush and snags

2. Please choose a date:
Between Monday July 18th and Sunday September 4th, I am available to begin hikes at 9:00 am and conclude by 4:00 pm. I am available Mondays, and Wednesdays through Saturdays. Sundays may be available if you are booking two or more weeks in advance. Let me know which date works best for you. All hikes will take place on or around Mt. Elphinstone in the Gibsons / Roberts Creek area. GROUP DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE FOR 4 OR MORE – PLEASE INQUIRE.

For folks interested in getting a head start on peak mushroom season, you may order and watch a video version of Shaggy Jack’s Wild Mushroom Foraging For Beginners, our extremely popular course about mushroom foraging on the West Coast. It is best to watch in advance of the hike so you may apply the knowledge you learn while we are in the forest. The video is a crash course slideshow presentation in mushroom foraging, teaching the basics of mushroom life cycles & ecology, how to safely identify & pick mushrooms, how to recognize & target mushroom habitats, what resources are needed for mushroom picking, & introduces students to a wide variety of common edible, medicinal & toxic mushroom species found on the Sunshine Coast and the West Coast of BC, with tips on identifying, harvesting, processing & cooking specific species.

* NOTE: Peak mushroom season in southwestern BC occurs from mid-September to mid-November. Students who take classes during peak mushroom season are guaranteed to be able to learn to identify a variety of edible mushrooms to bring home and try out during this time period. Mushroom foraging during the summer can be much more hit and miss depending on weather conditions, so Shaggy Jack cannot absolutely guarantee finding mushrooms in July and August on these hikes, although he will endeavor to take folks into areas that usually host chanterelles, lobster mushrooms, porcini or other edible mushrooms during the summer.
